#089 The Frog Prince

A young and very beautiful princess lost her ball in the water while she was playing by the side of a lake. She began to cry so sadly that the frog who sat beside the lake croaked to her, “What will you give me if I get you your ball back?”

“All the gold you could wish for!” replied the princess.

“No, I ask only that I am allowed to stay with you and be your friend,” said the frog.

The princess gave her word. She thought that such promise would not cost her at all and she had absolutely no intention of keeping her promise. The moment she had her ball back she ran off so fast that the frog could not keep up with her. Nevertheless, after a while the frog arrived at the palace.

As soon as she saw the frog, the princess was frightened. She ran to ask for help from her father, the king. The king was an impartial person, so he asked the frog to tell him the whole story. After he had known what had happened, he ordered his daughter to keep her promise. So the princess picked the frog up gently in her hand, but with a shiver of disgust, she let it drop to the ground again. But that one brief touch was enough to break the spell that bound that frog. As a result it to turn back into the young and handsome prince he had been before. The princess was shocked yet thankful as she met her love.

#086 A Lion Who Won't Admit Defeat

One day the lion woke up feeling better than he had ever been before. He felt so fit and healthy he could beat the world. So he rose proudly and went for a prowl in the jungle. So he came across a snake and the lion stopped.

“Who is the king of the jungle?” asked the lion.

“You, of course,” replied the snake, and slithered away.

Next, the lion came to a small pool where he found a crocodile.

“Who is the king of the jungle?”

“Why, you are,” replied the crocodile and slid into the murky depths of the water.

This went on all morning, all the animals agreeing that the lion was the king of the jungle. Then he came across an elephant.

“Who is the king of the jungle?” asked the lion.

In reply, the elephant picked up the lion with its trunk, hurled the lion in the air and then dropped him on the ground.

“Alright, alright,” groaned the battered lion.

“There is no need to get angry just because you don’t know the answer.”

The lion just would not admit his defeat.

#084 Ungrateful Tortoise

Once upon a time, there was a big feast in the sky; all the birds were invited to a feast by the people of the sky. Tortoise was very clever and very hungry. As soon as he heard about the great feast, it began to plan how it would travel to the sky.

Tortoise went to the birds’ home and asked if he could go with them. The birds agreed and they each give him a feather, with which they made a pair of wings for the Tortoise.

The great day came, Tortoise and the birds set off on their journey to the sky.

Finally, the birds and Tortoise arrived at the party. The people of the sky invited the birds to eat the delicious food they had prepared, but then Tortoise asked, “For whom have you prepared this feast?”

“For you, because you are special animals,” replied the people on the sky.

Tortoise turned towards the birds and said, “Remember I am is the most special animal, cause I am the only on Tortoise who can fly. You will eat after me.”

The birds waited angrily as Tortoise ate and drank most of the feast. Then they came forward to eat, but a few of them were too angry to eat. Before flying home, each bird took back the feather they had lent Tortoise without the Tortoise noticing. So, there Tortoise stood full of food and drink, but without any wings to fly home.

When the feast was over, birds and Tortoise jumped back to go home, but the tortoise was surprised because he lost his wings. So, the Tortoise fell and landed with a great crash on the ground. He wasn’t hurt but its shell broke into pieces. Fortunately, there was a good doctor in the neighbourhood. Tortoise’s wife sent him to the doctor and she collected all the bits of Tortoise’s shell and stuck them together. That is why Tortoise’s shell is not smooth.

#068 A Kind Woodcutter And A Tiger

One day, a woodcutter called Sok went into the forest to cut wood. On his way he found a tiger lying on the path. He looked more closely at the tiger. He saw that it way lying on top of a snake’s hole. “A snake has bitten it,” thought Sok.

He was a kind man and he felt sorry for the tiger. He took some medicine from his bag and rubbed it on the tiger’s fur. Straight away, the tiger opened his eyes. He saw that his beautiful fur was covered with medicine. He was very angry.

“Look what you have done to my fur!” he roared.

“I thought a snake had bitten you,” said Sok. “I didn’t want you to die.”

“Me? Die?” said the tiger. “Look, nothing bit me. I was asleep, that’s all. But you’re going to die very soon. I shall eat you for my lunch.”

Sok was very frightened. He knelt down on the ground and said, “Please don’t kill me. Please wait until I can find someone in this forest. Then I’ll ask him who is right, if you’re right you can eat me. If you’re wrong, then let me go.”

The tiger agreed and Sok looked around to find any living creatures. Then he saw a horse and a cow.

He told them the whole story, and then he asked, “Can you please help me. Who is right-the tiger or me?”

The horse and the cow knew that Sok was right. But they did not say anything to Sok.

“If we say Sok is right,” they said to each other, “the tiger will be very angry. He’ll eat us instead of Sok.” So they decided to walk away without deciding anything.

Now Sok was even more worried, he looked around again. Soon he met a hare. He told the hare his story.

“Please help me,” he asked.

“Yes. I’ll help you,” the hare replied. “Go back and start talking to the tiger; I will be there as you two were talking.”

Sok went back to the tiger and started talking. Soon the hare come along.

“What are you two talking about?” the hare asked.

The tiger said, “I was just asleep but this man covered my beautiful coat with medicine!”

Then Sok said, “I thought a snake had bitten him. I didn’t want him to die.”

“Hmmmmmm,” said the hare. “I want to find out what really happened. Go back to the place where you were sleeping, tiger. I would like to know from the beginning.”

The tiger went back to the snake’s hole and laid on top of it. The snake came out of its hole and bit him.
“This time, don’t rub any medicine on his fur,” said the hare. So the tiger died and Sok were saved.

#060 Clever Violinist

One day a violinist decided to play some music as he was walking through the woods. But this attracted a large fierce bear.

“How well you play,” he praised the man. “Could you teach me to play as well?”

“Of course,” answered the violinist, not fooled at all. “As long as you do what I tell you. Put your paws in the crack in this tree.”

The bear did as he was told and the musician was quick to jam his paws in the crack with a large stone. The bear was stuck tight.

The next time the violinist played, he attracted a lion, and the same trick was repeated. This time the beast was caught in a trap and ended up hanging by its tail from a tree. Then it was the turn of a tiger, which was captured by a similar trick.

When the three wild beasts managed to free themselves, the chased after the violinist to seeking revenge; but they found him in the company of a new friend: a huge woodsman with a giant axe, who chased the animals away.

And so the clever violinist crossed the forest in safety.
