#46 Kancil And Crocodile

Kancil (name of a mousedeer), the small but clever mousedeer, had many enemies in the forest. Fortunately, he was quick-witted, so that every time his life was threatened, he managed to escape.

One of his greatest enemies was Crocodile, who lived in the river that bordered the forest. Many times Crocodile had tried to capture the small mousedeer. Crocodile was big, but he was not very clever. Kancil was able to trick him every time.

One day it was very hot, there was no wind at all. It was in the middle of the dry season. For many weeks no rain had fallen so that the little creeks where the small animals used to drink had dried up. Kancil was walking alone in the forest; he was very thirsty. He had walked a long way; looking for a brook where he could quench his thirst, but he had found only dry mud in the once full of water brook. It was very quiet in the forest. All the animals seemed to be sleeping. Even the birds did not sing in the trees. Kancil finally decided to go to the river that bordered the forest. Usually he avoided going there as he knew that Crocodile was always on the look-out for him, waiting for an opportunity to catch him.

When he arrived at the river,  Kancil looked cautiously around him. There was nobody to be seen. The clear river water mirrored blindingly the rays of the sun. Step by step Kancil approached the water. His sharp eyes looked right and left; his pointed ears strained to catch the slightest sound. But no danger seemed to threaten him this time. Relieved, he bent his head to enjoy the cool water. Suddenly, his glance fell upon an object that was floating not far away from where he stood. It was a blackish thing. It looked like a fallen branch or like the back of crocodile! Kancil jumped back, surprised and thoughtful. But he was also very thirsty. How could he possibly know whether the thing there in the river was really a log or a crocodile? Then he smiled a little as he hit upon an idea.

In a clear voice he shouted, “Hey! There, you who are in the river. If you are crocodile, don’t answer me, but if you are only a log of wood, tell me your name!”

It was really Crocodile who was floating in the river. He had seen Kancil near the river. Without thinking any further, Crocodile answered Kancil in his gruff voice, “Don’t be afraid, I’m only a harmless log!”

Immediately, Kancil ran away as fast as his leg could carry him, while shouting over his shoulder, “O, stupid Crocodile, have you ever heard a log of wood talk?”

A fortnight later, Kancil forgot this incident. The dry season was not over yet and it seemed to be hotter than ever. Kancil remembered the cool, fresh river water. How wonderful it would be take a bath in it! He decided to try his luck once again. This time there was nothing suspicious to be seen, so Kancil went to the water and drank to his heart’s content. It was very quiet, and also very hot. Without thinking any further Kancil went down into the river and began to splash himself. In his delight he forgot all about danger. He picked up a dry twig that was floating by and began to beat the water with it. He made so much noise that the crocodile woke up.

“Well, well, this seems to be my lucky day,” thought Crocodile. In a flash he shot out of his hiding place. All of a sudden Kancil felt sharp teeth biting into one of his legs. It hurt him very much, but though he was shocked and frightened Kancil did not lose his wits. Without hesitation he dipped the dry twig into the water and in a mocking tone he said, “stupid old log of wood, do you really think you have got me? It is only a twig you have in your mouth, not my leg. Here is my leg, catch it if you can!”

Kancil moved the twig rapidly to and in front of Crocodile’s eyes. Crocodile could not see very well in the water and above all, he really was blockhead! He believed Kancil and released Kancil’s leg and snapped his jaw on the twig. Of course, kancil did not wait one second to jump out of the water and run to the safety of the woods. Though his leg was very painful, he laughed heartily. Once more he had tricked Crocodile.

#045 Belog's Story

In a village in Bali there once lived a silly happy boy called Belog. “Belog” means “Blockhead” in Balinese, and Belog was well known around his village because of the foolish things he was always doing. The people of the village never grew tired of telling each other stories about Belog’s simple-minded behavior.
Folktale from Bali
One day Belog’s mother accidentally dropped her last box of matches into a puddle of water. The matches got wet and would not light. She needed immediately matches to light her stove, so she called out to her son and said. “Belog, please go to the shop and buy some matches. The matches that I have are wet, and I cannot light the fire to cook our meal.”

She gave Belog some money and then added, “Do make sure that the matches you buy are dry and can light easily!”
Folktale from Bali
So Belog took the coins for the matches from his mother, and happily walked to the village shop. He walked inside and asked the owner for a box of matches. Then Belog carefully counted his coins and paid for the box and began to walk home.
Folktale from Bali
No sooner was he outside the shop, then a thought struck Belog. He opened the box and looked inside.

“They look like good matches to me.” he thought. “But how can I be certain? I’d better try one.”

For illustration not promotion

Belog took out one of the matches and lighted it. It caught fire easily.
Folktale from Bali
“Ah, that match is all right,” he said. “But how about the others?” so Belog took out all the matches one by one and lighted them to see that they were good.

“This is a good box of matches. “Belog said to himself. Then he returned home.
Folktale from Bali
“Here mother,” said Belog with an honest and foolish smile on his face. “I bought a good box of matches. They all work. I tested all of them!” then Belog handed his mother the box of used, burnt matches.
Folktale from Bali
His poor mother, what could she say? After all, Belog was her only child, and she loved him dearly.

#044 The Monkey And The Buffalo

A monkey wanted to cross a river to eat some bananas on the other side. Unfortunately, he did not know how to swim. He asked a buffalo to carry him across on his back.

“All right,” said the buffalo. “Jump on. I’ll walk across. There’s some very tasty grass on the other side which I would like to eat.”

So the monkey rode on the buffalo’s back across the river. When they reached the other side, the monkey jumped off. He ran to eat as many bananas as he could. The buffalo was quite happy eating the long grass.

After some time, the monkey wanted to return home. He asked the buffalo to take him back. But the buffalo told him to wait a little longer as he had not yet finished eating.

The naughty monkey began to sing. He made such a loud noise that a farmer, who was working in a nearby field, came to see what the matter was.

He shouted at the buffalo, “Thief! Thief! Why are you eating my grass?” he threw some stones at the buffalo.

The buffalo stopped eating and ran. When the farmer had gone, the monkey came out from where he had been hiding. The buffalo was holding his sore head; he had been hit by a stone at his head.

“Oh, oh! Why did you make so much noise? If you had kept quiet, the farmer wouldn’t have noticed me.”

The monkey did not know what to say. The buffalo asked him to sit on his back to return across the river.

When they were half-way across, the buffalo said to the monkey, “I want to roll over and take a bath here.”

“Please don’t! “ The monkey begged. “I can’t swim.”

“That’s not my fault,” replied the buffalo. “You like to sing and make a noise. I always like to roll over in the water. It’s so cool and pleasant and it will cure my painful head.”

Without saying any more, he rolled over in the water. Luckily, the monkey was holding on tightly otherwise he would have drowned. When they reached the other side, the monkey jumped down from the buffalo’s back. He was very wet and frightened.

“I shall never give you trouble again,” he promised the buffalo.

#043 The Tranquilizer : Blood Sick (Part 5)

Suddenly the light was on and Sean saw Murdoc Junior holding a machine gun and started shooting at him. Sean jumped behind the wall and started running as the bullets went through the wall. When Murdoc Junior stopped to shoot, Sean took out his gun and aimed at the door to shoot Murdoc Junior’s hand while preparing to escape if it missed. Murdoc Junior kicked the door and came out. He was fearless, it was better for him to die in battle rather than being captured by enemy.

Sean shot at Murdoc Junior and it hit his lower arm! Surprisingly, Murdoc Junior was still able to move his hands and fingers. Apparently, the tranquilizer didn’t work well as Murdoc Junior was very muscular. Murdoc Junior started to shoot again. Sean ran away trying to escape. He then walked into a narrower path. He decided to climb the wall with his hands and feet against the wall. When Murdoc Junior walked passed, quickly Sean jumped on him and stuck a few tranquilizing needles on both of his palms. Murdoc Junior easily slammed Sean away from him. Sean was thrown in the corner.

“Now you die!” shouted Murdoc Junior while pointing his gun at Sean.

The tranquilizers worked! His fingers couldn’t pull the trigger. He became angry and started to ram at Sean who tried to stand up. Sean avoided successfully and ran into an elevator. Once inside he pressed the button to the lowest level. The door was closing while Murdoc Junior was rushing to get into the elevator. Once Murdoc Junior entered the elevator, Sean put on a mask and started spreading tranquilizing gas. Murdoc Junior fell into Sean’s trap! Murdoc Junior tried to take the mask from Sean, but Sean kept trying to avoid him. Not long Murdoc Junior was able to take away the mask. Sean then prevented Murdoc Junior from wearing it. The fight continued with them not wearing mask.

*sound of an elevator arrived*

Tranquilizing gas leaked out from the elevator. Sean made it out from the elevator while Murdoc Junior was lying inside elevator. Sean was successful in capturing Murdoc Junior tranquilized and alive!

Murdoc Junior was brought back to FBI secret office. The FBI had his dad, Murdoc King to arrange a trade between his son and the nuclear bomb. Murdoc King had no choice but to do the trade. They then arranged a trade at a deserted factory near a sea where the nuclear bomb was located at. America was saved as they had retrieved the nuclear bomb and the trigger.

Murdoc King and his son with his right hand man and a few soldiers escaped with a speed boat. There are many enemy soldiers were guarding until their leader reached the safe area.

In the boat, Murdoc King ordered his right hand man, “find and kill the man who captured my son.”

#042 Four Greedy Bald Men

Once upon a time there were four bald men who lived in village. Wherever they went, children laughed and shouted at them, “Baldy! Baldy!” It was true that their heads were as smooth as eggs.

One day, the four of them decided to go to the city to find a doctor who could help them grow hair.

“If you will do exactly as I tell you,” said the doctor, “Your hair will grow as thick as rice in a field.”

The doctor told them to wash their heads using the water from the well behind his house. The four bald men followed his advice. As soon as they had finished washing their heads, they clapped their hands with joy. Their heads were covered with thick black hair. All their friends said that they looked much younger.

After a while, they wanted to get married.

“Everyone says how handsome we look now that we have hair. If we wash our heads once more, maybe we shall become even better looking. It will then be very easy for us to find wives.”

They all rushed back to the magic well to wash their heads once more. This time, however, they washed away all the hair they had grown, and they became completely bald again.

“Aiyah!” they cried, “what has happened! Perhaps we were too greedy. We should have obeyed the doctor’s instruction. Perhaps, if we ask him to forgive us, he will be able to help us grow hair again.”

They went to see the doctor, followed by a crowd of children laughing and pointing at their smooth bald heads.

“O Doctor!” they cried. “We disobeyed you and now we are bald and ugly again! Please help us to grow some hair.”

“I’m afraid I can do nothing more to help you,” the doctor said. “Your bald heads will always remind you of your greed and disobedience.”

Then they returned to their village with sad faces.
